Lego has announced that its first brick pieces made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugar cane will go on sale later this year. Production has started on the sustainable pieces, which include “botanical elements” like leaves, bushes, and trees. The new pieces are made from polyethylene, a soft and durable plastic, and Lego notes that they are “technically identical to those produced using conventional plastic.”

This is pretty freaking awesome. Also, I really like that they’re starting with plants and leaves. This is part of an initiative to have all their core products be produced using sustainable means by 2030.

this is so lame. marketing something that is sustainable as being “green” and sustainable and associating it with plants is the best way to make sure your campaign (and therefore your product) fails.

    and by 2030? come on.

The cost of renewable energy is now falling so fast that it should be a consistently cheaper source of electricity generation than traditional fossil fuels within just a few years, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The organisation – which has more than 150 member countries – says the cost of generating power from onshore wind has fallen by around 23% since 2010 while the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity has fallen by 73% in that time. With further price falls expected for these and other green energy options, IRENA says all renewable energy technologies should be competitive on price with fossil fuels by 2020.

Globally, onshore wind schemes are now costing an average of $0.06 per kilowatt hour (kWh), although some schemes are coming in at $0.04 per KwH, while the cost of solar PV is down to $0.10 per KwH. In comparison, the cost of electricity generation based on fossil fuels typically falls in a range of $0.05 to $0.17 per KwH.

While Trump’s swamp-addled Education Secretary Betsy DeVos tried to speak at Harvard University to sell her special privatization of public school branding “school choice,” she found herself the subject of an incredibly powerful and well orchestrated “silent” protest. Silently standing up as the DeVos speech got under way was one young woman, holding up a sheet with “White Supremacist” emblazoned in red on it. Then another young man stood up silently with a sign reading “Our Students Are Not 4 Sale!” As security tried move protestors along by speaking to them, more and more students unfurled signs saying “Protect Survivors’ Rights,” Our Harvard Can Do Better,” “Reclaiming My Democracy,” and “Dark Money,” amongst others. During her stupid speech promoting charter schools, she tried the rhetorical oratory trick of asking a rhetorical question.

DeVos: So what do we do? Increase funding? Does that solve the problem?

To which a student responded “Yes.” In the silence of the room, the answer is clear and perfect. Students responded with snapping instead of clapping during the protest—keeping the volume of the event very low. Later on, during a question and answer section one student asked one of those questions you wish a senator or a reporter might ask.

Student: So, You’re a billionaire with lots and lots of investments, and the so-called “school choice” movement is a way to open the floodgates for corporate interests to make money off the backs of students. How much do you expect your net worth to increase as a result of your policy choices and what are your friends on Wall Street and in the business world—like the Koch brothers—saying about the potential to get rich off the backs of students?

DeVos was pushed through the nomination process even though she was so clearly unqualified to even write a book report let alone run our country’s Department of Education. Please watch the whole clip. It is really very powerful and is definitely a type of protesting that could be very effective at times, forcing the subject of the protest to grin and bear it.

URGENT; PLEASE SPREAD THIS WIDELY! According to the Associated Press, Hillary Clinton has already accumulated enough delegates to win and become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. Please ignore this announcement, it is not true at all. They’re including unpledged superdelegates in the delegate count to misinform potential voters. The primaries are far from over. Neither of the candidates will reach the 2,383 pledged delegate threshold needed to win the Democratic Party nomination. There will be a contested convention.

    The Real Math

(As of June, 4th, 2016) Total Number of Delegates Available = 4763

CURRENT Score Hillary Clinton = 1769 Bernie Sanders = 1501

Total Number of Delegates Required to Clinch the Nomination = 2383 Total Number of Delegates Remaining = 1493 Total Number of Delegates Who Vote on June 4th Through June 14th, 2016 = 930

No Candidate Can Clinch the Nomination Before June 14, 2016

Hillary Clinton Would Need 614 out of 930 Bernie Sanders Would Need 882 out of 930

Total Number of Delegates Who Vote on July 25th, 2016 = 719 (Democratic National Convention)

The Nomination Will Be Decided on July 25th, 2016.

Please spread the word, this must go viral! California voters deserve better!

Tl;dr: Ignore it! Keep phone banking and donating and volunteering and canvassing!

i honestly thought hillary won holy shit

    Kill the rich.

For those who can’t load the article:

“Both [families] are told they’ll be participating in a documentary about money. Instead, a producer from the show unexpectedly comes to their house with a suitcase full of cold, hard cash: $101,000 to be exact. That could be a life-changing – and in the case of families so near the financial cliff, nearly life-saving – sum of money. But this being reality TV, instead of just giving them the cash, there’s a major catch.

Both families are informed that somewhere out there, there’s another family “who’s also in need,” and are given a choice: “You can keep all of the money, you can keep some of the money, or you can give it all away.” Neither family knows that the other family also has a suitcase full of cash and is debating how much, if any, they’ll share.”

What follows, predictably, is a gut-wrenching look at the two families being guilted this way and that over whether to choose charity or financial survival.

this is the most disgusting shit, what in the fuck

there’s a quote from the announcer guy in the trailer that says “through it all, they learn it’s not the money, but the journey that will teach them what they value most”

like. u giving these struggling families money, families WHO NEED THE MONEY, and u gonna fucking sit there like these ~life lessons~ are more important than the cash to pay off debts and bills and tuition and other necessities they’ve been denied because they’re not cushy rich people?

like lmao i can’t believe this. i cannot believe a buncha people got together and thought this would make for good television, it’s so fucking offensive? if my mom and i had been on this show and we found out they were fucking guilting us to decide on how much to keep or share even tho the other family also has the same money like.

we would prob set everyone on fire tbh. why do people think playing with emotions like this is television worthy like i am SO disgusted

poor people are just entertainment it seems!!! lol!!!!!

I did not believe this was a real thing and it FUCKING IS.

Kevin Moore was asleep in his home the morning of April 12, when his uncle yelled to him: “The police are tazing Freddie.”

Kevin Moore was asleep in his home the morning of April 12, when his uncle yelled to him: “The police are tazing Freddie.”

Moore, 28, ran out of his home in the same Gilmor Homes complex where Freddie Gray was arrested and sprinted across the street to get a view of what was happening.

“Once I got around to see where Freddie was, I instantly started recording,” Moore said.

Moore shot one of the two cell phone videos of the Gray arrest that morning that have since ignited protests and raised questions about whether the police arrested him without force or incident as cited in an officer’s report.

Moore said he found his friend handcuffed, “screaming for his life,” and planted face down on the ground with one Baltimore bicycle police officer’s knee on his neck and the other bicycle officer bending his legs backward so that Gray’s heels were in his back .

“They had him folded up like he was a crab or a piece of origami. He was all bent up,” Moore said.

“He said ‘I can’t breathe. I need a pump,’ and they ignored him,” Moore said. Gray had asthma and Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez confirmed at a press conference on Monday that Gray asked for an inhaler, but police did not have one at the scene.

Moore said, “The police yelled ‘stop resisting,’ but there was no resistance. He couldn’t move.”

Moore thought he heard a Taser go off, but Rodriguez said that while one officer drew his Taser, it was not used on Gray.

When police went to pick Gray off the ground, Moore said his friend had limp legs. His cell phone videoshows police carrying Gray to the van, his legs dragging behind him. Gray appears to briefly stand on one leg just before entering the van.

After police loaded him into the van on Presbury Street and drove off, they stopped one block away at Mount and Baker streets to re-restrain Gray with leg irons. Moore said he heard Gray screaming again at that time and raced down the block to get more footage, but by that time, a crowd of police had surrounded the van.

“I didn’t see any movement,” Moore said. “I saw his body but he wasn’t moving.”

Moore wonders if Gray could have been paralyzed then, and is convinced police injured Gray.

“He didn’t put himself in a coma. He didn’t fracture or crack three of his own vertebrae,” Moore said. “He didn’t sever his own spine.”

Moore and several residents living near the scene of Gray’s arrest were highly skeptical that none of the eight cameras along the streets where Gray was apprehended and re-restrained had footage of the arrest.

“If I were to commit a crime they would have every angle,” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense that these cameras work, but when the police do something, they don’t.”

Rodriguez said that only one camera captured any of the events. He showed what they had at the press conference and it revealed neither the full arrest, nor the subsequent restraining.

However, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Wednesday the police department is now looking for additional videos of the incident from police cameras.

“We’re reviewing the cameras in the area to find out if there’s any visual evidence that would be helpful to the investigation. As we find it, and as we can release it, we will immediately do that,” she said.

As for his footage, Moore said he gave his cell phone video to everyone who requested it and didn’t ask for any money.

“I’m tired of the police killing us and getting away with it,” Moore said.

He said he also gave the video and spoke to two detectives within the Baltimore Police Department’s Office of Internal Oversight.

“Black lives matter. Enough is enough,” he said. “You wonder why we dislike the police or are aggressive toward the police, this is why. Prime example, right here.”

I’d just like to say something.

We’ve never had any problems with people threatening the lives of Muslims (as far as I’m aware) here in Chapel Hill. The three people who were murdered were the very VERY close friends of some of my good friends. I’m sitting here eating breakfast...

but y’all forgot back in 2007 at the Hip Hop awards when he won best video for Stronger and he felt UGK and Outkast deserved it more than he did so he tried to give his award to them during his speech. This ain’t nothing new for him....
