    <><>Boom For Real<> dir. Sara Driver (2007)

<>Exploring the pre-fame years of the celebrated American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and how New York City, its people, and its tectonically shifting arts culture of the late 1970s and ‘80s shaped his vision.

    Available on Hulu rn.

    Take aways so far:

Jean suffered from a VERY unhealthy addiction to (white) women

Jean and his Fab 5 graffiti artist crew should be credited with introducing rap to the new age white kids in Manhattan in the 80s

This doc is almost two hours long and you never once get to hear Jeans voice which I believe is on purpose. Imagine making such an enourmous impact on the larger art community in Manhattan at such a young age…as a poor homeless person.

His conceptual style was termed “let art be….let the paint drip”.

white artists used his poverty against him and purchased stuff for the low which he would promptly inject into his veins. They immediately saw the artistic value in his work and left him in his dark place alone.

and some of those same works sell for 10 million now days isn’t that a trip?

    Sick sad world
