A series of five screenshots from a Design-milk article titled “LEGO Launches Braille Bricks for Children to Learn Braille” By Keshia Badalge. The article was published on 05/15/19.

Image 1/5 contains text and a photo of four LEGO bricks. The bricks are labeled “P” “L” “A1” and “Y”. Each brick has raised bumps to correspond with the Braille character on its label.

The text reads, “At the Sustainable Brands conference in Paris last month, the LEGO Foundation and LEGO Group announced their new project to help blind and visually impaired children learn braille through custom LEGO Braille Bricks.

The idea, first proposed by the Danish Association of the Blind in 2011, was brought up again in 2017 by Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind in Brazil, and later developed in collaboration with blind associations in Denmark, Brazil, the UK, and Norway.”

Image 2/5 contains text and two photos. Both photos are of a young boy playing with the Braille LEGO bricks. In the first photo the boy is holding up a LEGO board with several LEGO Braille bricks stuck onto it, he is running his fingers over the bricks. In the second photo, the boy has layed the LEGO board down onto a table, he is still running his fingers over the bricks.

The text reads, “Why now? Philippe Chazal, Treasurer of the European Blind Union, cites the rise of audio books and computer programs. As a result, he claims “fewer kids are learning to read braille.”

    Image 3/5 is all text.

It reads, “We strongly believe LEGO Braille Bricks can help boost the level of interest in learning braille,” he continued. In the United States, only 10% of blind children are learning to read braille, even though according to Chazal,

“Braille users often are more independent, have a higher level of education, and better employment opportunities.”

WHO estimates that 19 million children around the world are vision impaired and 1.4 million of these children have irreversible blindness.

The statistics when they grow up look discouraging: In Europe, around three quarters of adults with vision disability are unemployed, compared to 53% with general disabilities.

The LEGO Braille Bricks will be fully compatible with the LEGO System in Play and use the same number of studs for individual letters and numbers in the braille alphabet.”

Image 4/5 contains text and two photos. The photos are of a young boy using the Braille LEGO bricks. In both photos he is running his fingers over the raised surfaces of the LEGO bricks.

The text reads, “The bricks aren’t just meant for braille learners. For teachers and sighted children, these bricks also feature a printed letter or character, so everyone can join in the fun.

The set contains about 250 Braille Bricks covering the full alphabet, numbers 0-9, and math symbols.”

Image 5/5 contains text and a photo of two children playing with a pile of the LEGO Braille bricks.

The text reads, “The product is currently being tested in various languages too: Danish, Norwegian, English, and Portuguese, with German, Spanish, and French testing to begin in the third quarter of this year.

The final LEGO Braille Bricks kit is expected to launch in 2020 and will be distributed free of charge to institutions in LEGO’s partner networks.”

Zak Storm episodes in Viewing Order!!

I tend to break Season 1 of Zak Storm into three parts of 13, mostly because there are three different parts plot/theme wise and it also makes it easier to see the rising tension and have a series of building climaxes as the Episodes go.

    Some things to note are:

    ·         Origins was apparently supposed to be a three parter, not a two parter and as a result the pacing is a bit janky

    ·         The broadcasters had severe issues of airing the episodes in what they felt was the order of ‘best scripted/strongest episodes first’ and as a result in the original airing order you had things like waypoints being opened before they were found

    ·         The show is very good at subtle/slow build of plot and character and lore, but that DOES mean that you sometimes have to wait to get answers

    ·         And other small things like that.

    ·         The show is an action adventure series, but despite that there are strong intrapersonal relationships and an emphasis on family and team work

    ·         The show does occasionally deal with very mature maters.  Nothing NSFW, but themes like death, homesickness, and even defense-vs-revenge.  For me this is wonderful, but that might not be for everyone

    ·         The First ‘season’/5 or so episodes are a bit slow, but it DOES pick up and WOW is it amazing once it does!!

    Hey folklore side of Tumblr,

Have I ever talked about getting lost in the forest when I was 12 and of the lady of the woods showing me how to get home or…?

    kendrene

    STORY TIME!

I spent all of my summers as a kid vacationing in the Alps. My grandparents would rent from some people for 2 months and they’d take me with them when school was over because my parents worked. The house itself was old and there were definitely some things going on in it at night, but that’s a story for another time.

What I’m gonna talk about is what happened when I was 12. It was a summer like any other, almost at its tail end, and as it often happens in the end part of August in the Alps, you get days when it drizzles and it may or may not mist up. It so happens to be perfect weather for mushroom picking, so one such morning I told my gran I’d go take a small walk in the woods (literally up the street from the house) to look for mushrooms. She told me to not go too far, but wasn’t particularly fussed. I’d grown up playing in that forest and I knew it back to front. I was not very far from the track that ran all the way up to the peak of the mountain at all when this gauzy sort of fog suddenly rolled in. One moment it was raining softly, the next the rain had stopped but I couldn’t see past the nearest trees. Couldn’t find my way back either, and the part of the forest looked like nowhere I’d ever been before.

What the folks that live there taught us kids to do if we ever got lost, was to not panic, stop walking and try to spot a familiar tree or rock to regain our bearings. As it was early in the morning (around 9.30 am or so) I wasn’t concerned with darkness falling yet, and figured that this kind of fog would eventually lift closer to noon when the air warmed up. So I sat down and waited. And waited. And waited maybe an hour before starting to get a bit upset. It was still and quiet, no sounds at all (no birds or foxes, nothing) and when I tried to speak to myself or sing my voice wouldn’t carry. And all of a sudden I had this feeling that unless I sat very still and very quiet something horrible was going to happen to me. I did just that and the feeling grew and grew until I was basically holding my breath, and then as it disappeared like the bursting of a bubble, I saw a figure standing about 30 paces away from me. She (I just instinctually knew it was a woman) stared at me from the shadow of a deep hood, and was swathed in green/brown from head to toe. (in what looked like a cloak or a tabard). I blinked, and when I looked again she was looming over me, and still I couldn’t see her face. I knew it was there, in a nebulous sort of way, and I could glimpse her eyes after a fashion but the rest was just… the deep shadows under the trees.

She didn’t speak, but pointed a finger at me (pale, pale hands) and then pointed somewhere to my left. And I knew I had to go right then. I had been frozen up by fear up to moments before but as soon as she pointed I was compelled to run. I couldn’t stop, even though I tried.

I kid you not, I ran maybe 10 steps all told and the fog was gone and I was back on the track that led to the village.

There are stories about things living in the woods, and when I described the feeling of horror and doom to one of the old people that lived down the road, they mentioned the  part of the forest nobody goes to anymore called the Wood of the Giant (which I knew of but was sternly warned to never go to because it was “dangerous”). This old man told me someone evil used to live there alone, and people that would go into those parts to hunt wouldn’t come home. But, and this is the spooky thing, it was miles and miles from where I had been when the fog descended.

Here you have it. Believe what you will.

it’s 2 am, and I’ve been DYING for 20 minutes from ‘Tip: spice up your panic attack with a harmonica’

There's nothing wrong with cottagecore as an escapist fantasy, but it's important to remember that moving into a cottage in the woods will not fix the systemic issues that plague urban environments, and the flight of wealth from cities will only lead to further degeneration of urban conditions (see white flight).

Addressing some reasons people feel drawn to cottagecore and why these are non-unique:

  • Feeling closer to nature. Bring nature into the cities, not perpetuate the ideological divide between what it means to be urban and rural.
  • Cleaner environment. Cities don't have to be dirty. I've been to clean and walkable cities where the predominant mode of transportation is the bicycle and (protected) enormous old growth forests are only a few minutes away.
  • A sense of community. Atomization is a function of capitalism, not urbanity, and running away into the forest or small town will not fix the feeling of alienation from your community. A community doesn't just happen. It takes consistent effort on everybody's part.
  • Food security. Community gardens. Prevent the desertification of cities and the lack of affordable fresh produce instead of moving away to start a farm that helps only yourself. It's no better than the billionaires trying to colonize Mars.
  • Cottagecore is nice for daydreaming, but solarpunk is better praxis, as it uplifts entire communities instead of just one person/familial unit.
