In almost the same breath, you can find people claiming “I don’t trust the government with something as important healthcare”, and “marriage is important, the government should stop gays from having it.” The punchline is these people say their views come from principles.
Few people are truly principled, and they almost always suffer for it. A good example is the ACLU. For defending principles like free expression, the ACLU is a lightning rod that’s struck from all sides. Because in reality, most people are partisan hacks.
Most people don’t even receive the education necessary to understand the principles America is founded on. Instead what they care about is “winning” for their team. To these people, principles are nothing more than rhetorical devices to bash people with words.
