    Hello everyone,

My podcast is still going strong and a few days ago I upload our first ever episode with guests! Joey Min and Steph Pham from Art School Dropouts joined me and my cohosts to chat about the Jet Li movie, Fong Sai Yuk.

If you don’t know Art School Dropouts’ work, this is one of their “test fights” they shot during the pandemic.

I’m super proud of this episode mainly because it was so much bloody fun.

If you want to give it a listen, you can search for “Fu for Thought” on all good podcast platforms or you can just click the link below...

Go on, give it a listen. I talk about one of my best mates punching a girl in the face (accidentally). If you like the episode, we have 50 more you can listen to. How about that?

If you do listen (and you should), let me know what you think. Unless you think we’re wankers. Keep that to yourself.

maybe a lot to compile, but can you list what are the best martial arts films, old and new, available to watch on streaming in the uk specifically? ideally on services like netflix, amazon prime, or disney+ star. so either for free or low cost renting? or a one-off subscription to another service. thanks.

I wish I could help but I don’t live in the UK so I don’t know what’s currently streaming on British services. One tip I’d give you is to type “Shaw Brothers” into Amazon Prime. You should find plenty of gems that way.

Can any of my British followers help @tari101190 ? Have you stumbled across any kung fu nuggets of gold recently?

You can search Kung Fu movies on Amazon and it brings up dozens of them and then when you click one it then suggests even more. And if you click one of those suggestions it then suggests even more. Proper rabbit hole.

  • Clan of the White Lotus
  • The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
  • Hitman in the Hand of Buddha

Oh shit, The Night Comes For Us is on UK Netflix?! That’s tomorrow evening planned

    buzzardonic

So, uh. The Night Comes For Us.

That was one hell of a film.

Cinematography: excellent. Sound design and music: excellent. Violence: excessive (and excellent).

And my god, I should not have enjoyed watching Julie Estelle dismember someone as much as I did.

All in all, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone with a really strong stomach (I mean really strong) and a love of excellently choreographed action. I’m grabbing a dvd of it at the first opportunity.

I hate to say it but since it’s a Netflix movie, it’s unlikely that it’ll see a DVD/Blu Ray release anytime soon. But it’ll be on Netflix forever.

If you really, REALLY want a physical version of it, it did get a Blu Ray release in Hong Kong. I’m just not sure if it had English subs or not.

Everything you said about the film is one hundred percent correct. It’d be in my top 50 action movies of all time list.

Undercover punch and gun 2019 - Chinese movie. From trailer it seems there are few stunts that are good (like ok good) . Have you seen it. If so what's your opinion.

I have seen it. I bought the Hong Kong Blu Ray back when it was released...what, two years ago?

Don’t go in expecting a classic. But do go in expecting a nice throwback to 90’s era kung fu cinema. Philip Ng knows how to choreograph a fight scene, that’s for sure.

You know how some movies just make you feel warm and fuzzy inside? The Paper Tigers put a smile on my face from start to finish. It’s not the funniest film (though it is funny). It’s not the most action packed film (though the action is solid). It just has a shitload of heart. It’s a wholesome, fun watch and I recommend everyone give it a go.

Honestly? It’s one of my favourite movies of 2021 so far. It has a very Cobra Kai-ish feeling to it what with focusing on three washed up martial artists. I imagine if you like that show, you’ll enjoy this.

Weirdly, it’s a kung fu movie where the actual kung fu plays second fiddle. It’s more about the essence of martial arts; the meaning behind it. Like I said, it has a LOT of heart.

It’s currently about $7 to rent on Amazon Prime Video but I bought it for $15. It definitely has rewatchability. This was a tiny production so try not to illegally download it.

Enter the Dragon - In an interview Kelly says "in the original script he wasn't meant to die, it was actually Saxon who was meant to die"... Is this True. Can you imagine Bruce and Kelly tearing up the final scene. Would have been EPIC

If Kelly said it, I believe it. I don’t think he had any malice towards Bruce or Enter the Dragon. I’m sure they kept Saxon because he was the bigger name at the time.

If Kelly had lived, I think his career would have taken off. He had such star potential but ended up doing half-arsed kung fu movies that never had him at his true potential. Hell, if Bruce didn’t die, maybe he’d have cast Jim in more stuff.

    Have you seen Invincible?

The animated show? That shit is FLAMES. It doesn’t have the greatest looking animation or anything and, at times, it poses that annoying, “What exactly are their powers?” question (Eve can seemingly do everything). But besides these minor gripes, it’s phenomenal. The story has twists and turns, the action is amazing (and hyper violent at time), the characters are fun and colorful... Just good fucking tv.

I hear it gets better too as there are some dope characters they haven’t even introduced yet.

What didn’t you like about Mortal Kombat?

The film is bookended by pretty solid fight sequences. Both of which involve Scorpion and Subzero who are easily the best thing about the movie.

Literally everything else is trash. The script, the fight scenes, the characters etc. People will try and tell you Kano’s funny. He’s not. In 2021 you can’t put out action this shitty. I hate to say it but something like Hobbs and Shaw shits on Mortal Kombat when it comes to action, let alone movie like John Wick 3 and The Raid.

I honestly don’t know what people like about it. Goro looked shit, the fan service was embarrassing, there were only two decent fatalities... I could go on.

Hope you have watched trailer for "Shang-Chi", what's your view. It is being stated as Marvel's first martial arts movie (is this even True)

It’s my most anticipated movie of the year after watching the trailer. It looks like the perfect combo of martial arts and MCU type shit and since I love both, it should be a good time.

I’m happy I’ve grown to like Awkwafina too as originally I really hated her shtick. Looks like she’ll be fun and not too over the top in this one. Also, the aunt performers and fight choreographers they had on board are insanely talented.

I’d say it’s Marvel‘s first proper martial arts movie, yeah. I suppose the Blade trilogy would a the closest they ever got.

What's your view about "Warrior" series. Is it True that it's based on an original concept by Bruce Lee and executive producer is his daughter.

Yep...true. I’m not sure how much of the concept he’d actually written and how much they had to develop but it’s definitely based on Bruce Lee’s idea.

As for the show, it’s really good. Overrated as far as the action goes but it’s a really good drama. Great characters, an interesting story and some okay action to back it all up. Just don’t go in expecting top tier kung fu.

    Thoughts on the Snyder Cut?

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say it’s a true feather in DC Universe’s cap. I loved every single minute of it and even though it’s four hours long, I’ll definitely revisit it.

I actually liked the Whedon version but Snyder has shown me what a simpleton I was. He made a sprawling superhero epic that made the original cut look truly shite. They’re like chalk and cheese. I hated Cyborg and now I love him. That’s how different they are.

I loved the epilogue too. It felt like new ground being walked on. A post-apocalyptic joining of good and bad? Yes please.

I think Snyder makes good superhero films. That’s my take away. I appreciate him even more after the horribly disappointing The Suicide Squad trailer. But, spoiler alert: The Batman will shit on everything DC’s ever done.

just curious, why didn't you like Mandy?

At the end of the day, if you strip away its gore and nutso Nic Cage, it’s pretentious bollocks. Pretty pretentious bollocks, but bollocks nonetheless. The whole thing feels like the director sucking his own dick. “Look how ponderous and melancholy I can make things.”

I didn’t hate it I gave it 2 1/2 stars on Letterboxd. I feel like, deep down, it had a lot to give. You just have to wade through the art house drivel to get to a good movie and that’s a chore.

    anonymous

Random question:. Have you watched Willy's Wonderland? If so, what are your thoughts?

Not yet. Unfortunately I’ve heard some pretty bad things so I’m not as eager to watch it as I once was. Thankfully it’s not being overhyped like Mandy was because I feel like that one lured a lot of people in and delivered disappointment (though I get some people love it).

I’m all for the Nic Cage renaissance if the films he makes are good. For me, his best film in ages is Color Out of Space. I’m not down with loving his films just because it’s Nic Cage being oh so wacky.

Also...you cast Cage and you don’t give him anything to say? That’s blasphemy.

There's a fan movie on youtube "Cyberpunk 2077 - Phoenix Program". Would like to know your view

I didn’t love it. I like that it’s so action heavy but it really didn’t impress me all that much; which is weird because the director is really fucking good.

I don’t know, maybe I need to be more on the Cyberpunk 2077 bandwagon to appreciate it but I thought the action was pretty generic at times.

    anonymous

Have you seen The Invincible Dragon with Max Zhang? If so what are your thoughts?

I keep trying to summon the strength to watch it. I like Max Zhang a lot and I also like Juju Chan (don’t know how much she’s in it) but I’ve heard so many people say it’s a sack of shite.

I’ll definitely get to it but it’s not all that high on my list right now.

    anonymous

I know you’re not posting right now but thoughts on the Mortal Kombat trailer?

Aesthetically it’s incredible. Every single thing about it looks amazing. All the characters look great, the fatalities are in there and everything looks suitably bloody.

I only have two concerns. One, it looks like the plot is going to be as daft and cheesy at the 90’s Mortal Kombat and two, I can’t tell if the actual fight choreography is going to be good. Yes, it’ll be big and bloody but are there going to be nice exchanges? Is it going to be a good MARTIAL ARTS movie?

With that said, I’m bloody excited. It’s not my most anticipated movie of the year but I think it’ll be a good one.

I think this’ll be my last post on Tumblr for the foreseeable future. I hate to hop on the bandwagon but this place is pretty dismal these days. The small martial arts cinema community that existed on here is dead and my blog has faded into obscurity.

I’ll still lurk on here. I’ll like posts and answer all Asks (which takes away from this being the last post) but I won’t be posting any other kind of content.

If you’re desperate for my amazing insights and erotic aura, you can always hit me up on Instagram: fu_for_thought. You can also listen to my podcast if you like. Go on, you’ll like it.

No hard feelings or anything. I just can’t really be arsed anymore.

    Cheers.
