implications of having a birdgirl roommate:

    - free breakfast (regularly laid eggs)

    - never lose track of keys\etc. (knack for finding shiny things)

    in this economy? absolutely

if i had a cowgirl gf i would be drinking straight from the tap every day. to save money and for no other reasons. she could even help scramble the birdgirl's eggs

I am sorry but sheep produce wool.

She grows the cotton. She's very talented.

In antiquity, the fact that cotton came from plants was just mind-bending to Europeans. They assumed that it must be like, a sheep with a vine coming out of it, or something.

Why do they want us dead so badly

stfu this price on food will keep me alive when I’m starving and putting quarters together to maybe stay alive until my next shift.

rich people: why is unhealthy food so cheap? don’t they know we have no self-control and will eat this until it causes health problems?

poor people: oh, thank god, something i can afford.

Five bucks can buy you so much more though if you take more than five minutes to prepare it.

Umm. Idk where you’re buying groceries, but $5 doesn’t get me anything.

Lol they want u to live on salted pasta and nothing else. XDDD God forbid people want something cheap that TASTES good.

Like- if u have more than $5 u can buy lots of things in bulk and per serving it’s cheaper. But for just straight $5??? Fuck outta here. $5 is like the cost of one spice at a grocery store ffs

Yeah for just straight $5 I could maybe buy a bag of rice and a jar of peanut butter, and that’s honestly less complete nutrition than that fast food, which at least has some vegetables in it, some meat, etc.

Rich people don’t get that being poor actually costs money. Terry Pratchett summed it up pretty well in one of the Discworld books: “But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.”

In fact, it’s such a good example that one widely used term to describe this socioeconomic bullshit is literally ‘Vime’s Boots’

The fuller version of the quote:

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

See here for further developments in the impact of this concept on (for example) UK culture, most specifically as embodied in the Vimes Boots Poverty Index devised by Jack Monroe (and authorized by the Pratchett estate).

She sure knows how to walk that walk.

No, your eyes do not deceive you: that latex dress has the LaTeX logo on it. That's Leslie Lamport's set of TeX macros for document preparation. I wonder whose idea it was to print that on there, and if they thought it was a logo for the rubber rather than the system that printed it.

Wow there’s some fucking bullshit going on in the replies here. Moderate your fucking spaces on the internet, kick racists and other bad actors to the kerb or you risk losing everyone else. This guy has the right of it (scroll up to top).

Quit thinking you need to be fair to unfair voices

For anyone who can’t/won’t read that twitter thread, it’s by Michael B. Tager (@IamRageSparkle) and it says:

I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, “no. get out.

And the dude next to me says, “hey i’m not doing anything, i’m a paying customer.” and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, “out. now.” and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed

Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, “you didn’t see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them.” And i was like, ohok and he continues.

“you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it’s always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don’t want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too.

And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it’s too late because they’re entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down.

And i was like, ‘oh damn.’ and he said “yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people.” And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven’t forgotten that at all.

Tolerance is not a moral absolute; it is a peace treaty And peace treaties are not unilateral. They have obligations running in both directions.

You are not bound to tolerate people who have a stated intent to not tolerate you. Nor should you tolerate people who have a stated intent to not tolerate people who are tolerating you.

Thank you for sharing this everyone, for image IDing and all of it, thank you.

“I always remember having this fight with a random dude who claimed that ‘straight white men’ were the only true innovators. His prime example for this was the computer… the computer… THE COMPUTER!!! THE COM-PU-TER!!!

Alan Turing - Gay man and ‘father of computing’ Wren operating Bombe - The code cracking computers of the 2nd world war were entirely run by women Katherine Johnson - African American NASA mathematician and ‘Human computer’ Ada Lovelace - arguably the 1st computer programmer”

    - Sacha Coward

Also Margaret Hamilton - NASA computer scientist who put the first man on the moon - an as-yet-unmatched feet of software engineering, here pictured beside the full source of that computer programme. #myhero

Grace Hopper - the woman that coined the term “bug”

    - @robinlayfield

Grace Hopper did more than coin the term “bug. She invented the first program linker in the early 1950s, for the UNIVAC I. A program linker translates instructions from one language to another (for example, numerical codes that represent instructions translated to machine code that computers can read), which is the very foundation of how computer’s operate independently. she also pulled a steve rogers and tried to enlist in the military a bunch of times and was denied. then, an exception was made for her when she joined the navy reserves, and she ended up serving for over 40 years (half of which was active duty). she retired from the navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper. she was born in NYC in 1906. Grace Hopper was a fucking badass.

also computing was typically a job for women (many of whom were black women that made incredible contributions) back in the day, so it’s absolutely fucking wild that straight white men think they are the foundation of computer innovation. men PUSHED women out and took the credit.

Reblogging to do what the failed education system never did.

    Reblogging to do

    what the failed education

    system never did.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Adding Wendy Carlos to the list! Trans icon and pioneer of synthesized music!!

Also, just about every computerized device outside of desktops is running ARM chips now. Your phone, your keyboard, your car, your watch. Basically everything.

And ARM was primarily designed by Sophie Wilson, a trans woman.

writing sci-fi sucks ‘cause on one hand it seems like this character would say “son of a bitch” but then you have to pause and think, do they have dogs in space? Does this character know about dog breeding? Is it insulting to be compared to a dog in space? Is there misogyny in space? Do space people use misogynistic slurs? Does this character say bitch because they’ve absorbed a low level misogyny and it’s just part of the cultural lexicon of their world?

and then you shrug and give them all lasers because life is short and death is imminent

    18 May, 2013

That was the day the psychiatric establishment stood up and told me I wasn’t crazy. I’m not sick, there’s nothing wrong with me, and I am not a danger to myself or others. It’s the day they took me out of the DSM.

I don’t know what it was like to be gay in 1994, when homosexuality was taken out of the DSM-4. I don’t think I understood quite why it mattered, as everyone said the DSM was just guidelines and didn’t actually direct health policy. I figured the gay community would continue to be supportive to its members and retrograde doctors would continue to perform cruel treatments on teenagers and it wouldn’t mean anything.

But I think the story of the DSM-4 has been a powerful one. How we make history defines how we plan for our future. The myth of the DSM-4 has been used to show how a healthy life can be led, and this story became a real success in the West. I still marvel that gay marriage is now the norm in Europe and North America. Who could have believed that in 1994?

I have had a few years to mull over the meaning of the DSM-5. At times I feel comforted, at times satisfied. I know history will not play out for people like me in the same way it did for gay men and women. My situation is too private, and I grew up hearing myself used as the thick end of the wedge. I remember hearing on the radio when a politician or school official wanted to prevent the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance club on a high shcool campus, they’d say “What next? S&M clubs?” There is far less high ground for people like me to fight from, so we hide in caves. The DSM-5 won’t give us a banner to wave in public.

But the most difficult message of the DSM-5 is the other side of the coin. Yes it says I’m not broken, not dangerous. But there’s more.

By telling me I’m not sick, it tells me there is no cure.

    It has been ten years.

It has been a long, difficult decade.

I have learned to love myself so much more, but I continue to keep myself away from the ones I love.

I think back, from time to time, wondering about "regrets". If I had all this to do over again, would I? Would I re-live my adolescence and adulthood, knowing what I do now?

It would be tempting. It would be almost irresistible. But ignoring the fact that I am who I am because of my Gospodzha, I think the biggest problem with that prospect would be this:

If I re-lived my youth, I would suddenly have *two* enormous secrets to keep: my identity, and my knowledge of the future. And I am so very, very tired of having to keep secrets.

So even if I had the chance, I would likely continue to wait silently for the brief moments when I can be alone and air out this closet as best I can.

love living during the 3rd Red Scare, the 2nd Lavender Scare, and the 2nd Satanic Panic all at the same time. the political right is so normal and not unhinged at all

some folks have made a few additions that i think are worth bringing up, and i wanted to make some addendums of my own:

3rd US "Yellow Peril": there has been building animosity in the US towards China, and misinformation/conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic have only increased the xenophobia and racism towards people of east asian and pacific islander descent.

This is not the 2nd Satanic Panic in the US, but the 3rd. The 1st was in the 1950s and coincided with the 2nd Red Scare and 1st Lavender Scare. When I refer to the 3rd Satanic Panic, I am referring to the QAnon conspiracy cult and how their beliefs, accusations, and methods all mimic those of Satanic Panics in the US's past. One could argue that Satanic Panics have been going on for much longer than the 50s (the Salem Witch Trials come to mind). however, there are only officially two recognized historical Satanic Panics so far, with debate on the inclusion of QAnon as another Satanic Panic.

i've made a separate post about this, but i want to point out that the 2nd Lavender Scare that i am referring to is specifically the rising tide of violence and hatred towards trans people, gnc people, and drag performance. we are all, in the queer community, being affected by this rise in right wing violence, but it's important to acknowledge that the primary targets of this are those in our community who challenge gender cisnormativity, and especially trans women like me.

lastly, i don't really know what to call this other than a terrifying resurgence in antisemitism in the US and around the world. antisemitism has been around for a LONG time and taken on so many forms. in fact, i guarantee that if you look closely at many of these other scares/panics currently and historically, you will find a piece of antisemitism at their core. jewish people in the US are in danger, and many of them are scared. so, while we're fighting to protect all the other vulnerable populations affected by the scares and panics listed above, let's not forget that we need to protect jewish people too.

Capitalism corrupts or destroys everything it comes into contact with.   If you want to see the future of humanity under capitalism, just look at any mobile game or AAA title stuffed full of pay to wins and micro-transactions.   Sooner or later that will be every aspect of life.   Hell, it practically is in the States.

We let video games get taken over by regressive war simulators. We decided that "gaming" means "shooting people" and failed to make anything but FPSes and combat simulators. Those failings of capitalism also honed the genre into a tiresome repeat of deathmatch battles and gun fandom, but with enhanced breast jiggling physics engines.

Is it any wonder the genre filtered out anyone who wasn't an atavistic porn-and-shooting fanatic?
