That was the day the psychiatric establishment stood up and told me I wasn’t crazy. I’m not sick, there’s nothing wrong with me, and I am not a danger to myself or others. It’s the day they took me out of the DSM.
I don’t know what it was like to be gay in 1994, when homosexuality was taken out of the DSM-4. I don’t think I understood quite why it mattered, as everyone said the DSM was just guidelines and didn’t actually direct health policy. I figured the gay community would continue to be supportive to its members and retrograde doctors would continue to perform cruel treatments on teenagers and it wouldn’t mean anything.
But I think the story of the DSM-4 has been a powerful one. How we make history defines how we plan for our future. The myth of the DSM-4 has been used to show how a healthy life can be led, and this story became a real success in the West. I still marvel that gay marriage is now the norm in Europe and North America. Who could have believed that in 1994?
I have had a few years to mull over the meaning of the DSM-5. At times I feel comforted, at times satisfied. I know history will not play out for people like me in the same way it did for gay men and women. My situation is too private, and I grew up hearing myself used as the thick end of the wedge. I remember hearing on the radio when a politician or school official wanted to prevent the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance club on a high shcool campus, they’d say “What next? S&M clubs?” There is far less high ground for people like me to fight from, so we hide in caves. The DSM-5 won’t give us a banner to wave in public.
But the most difficult message of the DSM-5 is the other side of the coin. Yes it says I’m not broken, not dangerous. But there’s more.
By telling me I’m not sick, it tells me there is no cure.

I think back, from time to time, wondering about "regrets". If I had all this to do over again, would I? Would I re-live my adolescence and adulthood, knowing what I do now?
It would be tempting. It would be almost irresistible. But ignoring the fact that I am who I am because of my Gospodzha, I think the biggest problem with that prospect would be this:
If I re-lived my youth, I would suddenly have *two* enormous secrets to keep: my identity, and my knowledge of the future. And I am so very, very tired of having to keep secrets.
So even if I had the chance, I would likely continue to wait silently for the brief moments when I can be alone and air out this closet as best I can.

3rd US "Yellow Peril": there has been building animosity in the US towards China, and misinformation/conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic have only increased the xenophobia and racism towards people of east asian and pacific islander descent.
This is not the 2nd Satanic Panic in the US, but the 3rd. The 1st was in the 1950s and coincided with the 2nd Red Scare and 1st Lavender Scare. When I refer to the 3rd Satanic Panic, I am referring to the QAnon conspiracy cult and how their beliefs, accusations, and methods all mimic those of Satanic Panics in the US's past. One could argue that Satanic Panics have been going on for much longer than the 50s (the Salem Witch Trials come to mind). however, there are only officially two recognized historical Satanic Panics so far, with debate on the inclusion of QAnon as another Satanic Panic.
i've made a separate post about this, but i want to point out that the 2nd Lavender Scare that i am referring to is specifically the rising tide of violence and hatred towards trans people, gnc people, and drag performance. we are all, in the queer community, being affected by this rise in right wing violence, but it's important to acknowledge that the primary targets of this are those in our community who challenge gender cisnormativity, and especially trans women like me.
lastly, i don't really know what to call this other than a terrifying resurgence in antisemitism in the US and around the world. antisemitism has been around for a LONG time and taken on so many forms. in fact, i guarantee that if you look closely at many of these other scares/panics currently and historically, you will find a piece of antisemitism at their core. jewish people in the US are in danger, and many of them are scared. so, while we're fighting to protect all the other vulnerable populations affected by the scares and panics listed above, let's not forget that we need to protect jewish people too.
