Hold on, this is fascinating. Reblog this and tell me in the notes how old you are and if you ever had typing lessons.

    irishironclad

What in God’s good name is a “typing lesson”

    intjint

I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not

    irishironclad

I’m serious what is a typing lesson? What would they teach you? To type? My brother in Christ it is like writing with a pen but technically easier.

    intjint

Before home computers were very common, people typically only typed for business-related things, so the only people that actually knew how to use typewriters and word processors were authors, secretaries, accountants, etc. These people would take classes for typing bc it was seen as a skill. This gradually fell out of fashion, much like teaching kids cursive

Typing is only intuitive to gen y & z bc most of us learned through computer games or had someone tell us where to rest our fingers. People who never learned to type use just their index fingers, hit one key, take a long time to find the next letter, hit it with an index finger, and repeat until finished

    robin-hood-for-freedom

    34 i played this:

    dealanexmachina

Also lemme tell you about the typing pool. Back then if you had a report to complete at the office and you didn’t have a personal secretary, you know what you had to do? You had to handwrite your report exactly the way you wanted, finish it by 10am and put it in your outbox. Then someone would come around with a cart collecting these papers, give them to the company typing pool - a group of (usually) women whose only job it was to get that report typed up quickly and correctly. Then by 2pm, your report would appear in your inbox, typed and ready to go. And heaven forbid if it was an official document and you had to change one (1) line that through all the pages off.

Seriously, typing is a skill and the QWERTY keyboard is not a natural thing to coordinate. It is just the thing we use the most so later generations have trained themselves to type from day one. For the rest of us, we had to learn.

Skylar Brandt was supposed to debut as Aurora today but since the season was canceled she debuted her own Rose Adagio.

    sodiumhydrobromide

Ok this is SO COOL because the Rose Adagio is a partnered dance–Aurora does exactly what’s shown in the video, but with the prince there rotating her and holding her waist, both for the attitude balance and the pirouettes. That wobbling you see while she turns? That’s not because she’s off balance (you could literally never do this without absolutely pinpoint perfect balance), that’s from the subtle movement of her foot to rotate herself. She is all the way en pointe, rotating sheerly by veeeery slightly adjusting her foot. You may be looking at this going “I don’t know much about ballet, but this looks pretty amazing.” I know ballet, and let me tell you, this is 100%, absolutely, INSANELY difficult, impressive, and fucking radical. Amazing doesn’t even begin to describe it.

I think my jaw actually dropped!

Can we please appreciate 2012 Casey Jones a little bit more?

In a world full of powerful mutants, robots, demons. aliens from other dimensions, and ninjas we have this 17 year old hockey loving high school boy who willingly got himself tied into helping four mutant turtles who know ninjutsu all because he wanted to

Casey had NO reason to help April and the turtles fight Shredder and the Kraang. He has no personal vendetta or history with an evil ninja clan like the turtles and Splinter. His family isn’t tied into an alien conspiracy like April. No, he just wants to help because he wants some excitement in his life

In S2 the writer’s make it clear that he’s a parallel to April’s goal when she cuts ties with the turtles, wanting a normal life as a normal teenager. Enter Casey Jones, who gives her that life but as she gets to know him, he shows that he’s looking for some excitement, leading April to realizes what she left behind. Casey wanted something fun and exciting because normal is boring and who really wants that? Once he met the turtles he jumped onto that opportunity.

Remember when he and Raph chased down the Foot Bot that got the location of the lair and was bringing it back to Karai? Casey had no reason to go after the robot and help Raph, the stakes and risk weren’t going to effect him in anyway. He could’ve just been like “lol not my problem” and leave, but instead he went after it and helped Raph protect his family, resulting in him and Raph starting their friendship and Casey alliance to help the turtles.

Casey started his vigilante life because he wanted to protect his dad, little sister, and even April from dangerous threats like the mutants he has seen, but after meeting the turtle and seeing the bigger threats he joined their team to help protect the people he loves. Casey is a ride or die kinda guy. He has fought, sacrificed, and almost gave his life so many times for his friends in a battle he has no real ties or connections to.

In the end, Casey Jones did all this because he wanted to, not because he had to. He made a choice to fight in a war he had no true reason to fight in and grew to love and care for his new found family and willing to die for them in battle.

2012 Casey Jones is the best!

It's hilarious to me when people complain about AO3 and its policies, and what they allow on the site - but it's ESPECIALLY funny when people complain like "Why can't the freaks make their own site and just go there?"

Sweetie... AO3 is the site for that. Y'all invaded our space.

Wattpad and FFN still exist. Go there. They're as shitty and G-rated as you want. You can't have the luxuries that AO3 offers if you're gonna be a little bitch about its policies. Imagine walking into a strip club and complaining about the alcohol and naked ladies when there's a god damn Dennys next door you could have gone to. Christ.

    error-404-fuck-not-found

who tf they think the "our" is in Archive Of Our Own??? it's freaks babe. AF3. archive for fucking freaks. if you don't go here that's a you problem

    cazort

so while i mostly agree with this I think there is a degree to which the “Our” in AO3 is fairly diverse and it’s natural for people to have sometimes competing needs or wants.

Although I agree in this case that FFN (and Dennys) are unappealing to me, I have also had the frustrating experience in life many times of having a clear picture in my head of knowing exactly what kind of site / community / restaurant / product / whatever I want, and having 2 or 3 options and none of them are really good.

So I can empathize with people who have frustrations about AO3 but find its alternatives worse, and also lack the resources to actually start an alternative to it.

That said I personally love AO3 and I don’t think there is a real need for an alternative or even for any major reforms for it, as far as I’m concerned.

    derinthescarletpescatarian

Their needs and wants are accommodated for here:

    And, more manually, here:

Without needing to open the fic. AO3 does an admirable job of accounting for a variety of readers looking for (or wishing to avoid) a variety of material. The problem is people who dont want the “our” to be diverse and who want to kill it and replace it with something exactly as popular and well-run but that caters specifically to their personal wants and deliberately excludes anyone not like them. Their argument isn’t ‘this place isn’t accommodating enough for me’, it’s ‘how DARE people I think are icky have a place where they can store and read stuff I think is icky?’ And they’re like, ‘oh, no, go make your own place; this place (that was specifically made as your own place for this exact reason) is too big and popular now and we want it, so leave (which will somehow not kill the archive)’. But they really mean ‘you shouldn’t have any place because the things I don’t want to read should never be written’.

    And they can fuck off.

    theimaginatrix27

    Listen. Listen.

I do not read smut (often) because I am ace and it's just not my thing. There are many things on AO3 that aren't my cup of tea but also many things that very much are.

I may be squicked out by stuff, but I know the purpose of the Archive, and I want it to continue being a haven for all the things the other fanfiction sites won't touch. I started out on FFN and lemme tell you, going through those archives looking for good shit was extremely difficult. Filtering options were limited, and if someone didn't put their thing in the correct section or whatever, I'd wind up very disappointed. Often I'd be very disappointed because it wasn't something I, personally, was looking for.

AO3 has a comprehensive tagging system. You can do so many cool things with your fics (author's notes having their own sections separate from the text, footnotes within the text, inserting images into chapters if you want to, all the amazing formatting options, and so much more!) And there are no lists of people whose works you can't make fan content for, no stupid arbitrary rules about second-person fics or script-formatted fics or whatever other nonsense FFN says you can't do, including adult content for adults, which can simply not be seen by minors if it's tagged properly and the site has an inbult feature that hides that by default and if you say you're a minor when making your account, which, hey, whadayou know, AO3 has implemented, and if you lie about your age when signing up, it's on you for lying, not on the site who has these safeguards in place for hosting stuff you're not interested in.

I love AO3. I love it very extremely much. There's part of me that wishes more of the G/T-rated fics would migrate over there so I could read all my favourite things in one place, because I've all but abandoned FFN at this point (too many ads), but fandom is predominantly queer, and I love a lot of queer content that I've found on Tumblr and AO3. I don't want it gone. I will support AO3 until either it or I no longer exist.

So we were given a fun little math assignments about inverse functions.

Our teacher made us grab a paper with a function in it and we need to solve for the inverse to find the other person that has the inverse and take a picture with them.

It's a fucking soulmate au type shit.

Just imagine being born with a fucking function in your arm and you need to go through school if you just wanna find who the fuck it is

they’re opening up a new sister store in a different province and they asked me to do some email correspondence with my joint health and safety counterpart out there to help him get set up and run the team, but they warned me before hand that he was “notoriously difficult” so i was absolutely dreading this thinking “shit, he’s gonna be one of those guys who thinks taking direction is an insult to his masculinity and he’s gonna be rude and suck”

but it turns out he’s just really autistic and needs super clear direction + he writes his emails like a 1911 telegram. i LOVE this guy. i’ve never worked with someone who wrote so clearly and in such detail, and absorbs everything i say. plus whenever he gets an email he responds immediately with “received. response to follow. thank you.” top 10 coworkers of all time. top 5 even.

    Frilled shark seen near Japan.

    bogleech

This is the only video of a frilled shark on the whole internet but it’s a deep sea animal in the process of dying which is why it swims so weird and its gills are puffed out and its whole front end seems paralyzed. Somewhere there are vibrant happy frilled sharks swimming gracefully like regular sharks but almost no one has ever seen what that’s like.

    bogleech

RE: why this happens: most of the ocean is just one huge open space with no physical barriers, so a deep sea animal relies only on its senses of light, temperature and pressure to tell it where it should stay. As it wears down with age or sickness those senses start to break down so everywhere probably begins to feel the same. It randomly wanders farther out of its habitat and sometimes that wandering takes it up and up and miraculously one of us humans sees it before any predators catch it, which is incredible because that’s hundreds of meters of distance it might have avoided porpoises, seals, barracuda, morays, squid, tuna, marlins, large jellyfish, even scavengers like lobsters and hagfish will often start eating something on the brink but not quite dead yet.

It’s sad, but it’s likely this shark lived a very long life, and it doesn’t know it, but it survived a very long trip in a very vulnerable state just to visit us for a moment. With its senses so far gone it may not have felt too bad. It might have felt like any ordinary day floating around its home until it fell asleep one last time, never knowing how it amazed and enlightened members of an entirely alien species in the process!

on the flip side of that Toxic Skincare Obsession post: I’m tired of seeing sun protection presented as another frivolous, unnecessary product of the patriarchy

    Skin Cancer Is Bad Maybe?

    they-callme-ami

I’m not gonna spend hundreds of dollars on tiny bottles of ‘anti aging sunscreen’.

I will however, get some sunscreen from my local Walmart and apply it to my face everyday, and my body when I don’t have clothes to cover me.

Doesn’t need to be expensive, and a lot of ‘cheap’ sunscreen is still very effective against the sun.

ESPECIALLY FOR MY POC/DARK SKIN FOLLOWERS, WE ARE NOT IMMUNE!!! If you hate it leaving a cast, I recommend either spray on sunscreens or Black Girl Suncreen.

    loracarol

Though people of color (POC) are less likely to become afflicted with skin cancer, they are much more likely to die from it due to delay in detection or presentation. Very often, skin cancer is diagnosed at a more advanced stage in POC, making treatment difficult. The purpose of this research was to improve awareness regarding skin cancers in people of color by providing recommendations to clinicians and the general public for early detection and photo protection preventive measures.

    […]

The increased morbidity and mortality rate associated with skin cancer in POC is due to lack of awareness, diagnosis at a more advanced stage and socioeconomic barriers hindering access to care. Raising public health concerns for skin cancer prevention strategies for all people, regardless of ethnic background and socioeconomic status, is the key to timely diagnosis and treatment.

    (source)

    Please, wear sunscreen. :(

    guildenstern

please also make sure, if you are planning to swim in or expose your skin to the ocean, to only wear reef safe sunscreen. many sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate which are incredible toxic to marine life. check the active ingredients of any sunscreen you are planning to wear in water

    1. You are responsible for your own media experience.

    2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.

    3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.

    4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, that’s fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.

    5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.

Looking at Pinterest drawing tutorials to make myself angrier and more full of rage

Much has been said about unrealistic female anatomy, but is it not even more bizarre and fucking terrible that <90% of generic male drawing tutorials show some kind of monstrous aftermath of bodybuilding, steroids and extreme dehydration and are like "this is a basic male torso"

    headspace-hotel

In the nicest way possible, if you see this as "basic" male anatomy and all other possibilities as variations on this, your art will be Not Good except in circumstances of dumb luck

99% of men Do Not look like this, ever, at all, and out of those that ever do, they Do Not look like this 99% of the time.

Abs don't appear defined unless you're tensing and flexing your whole abdomen, and they don't appear that defined unless you're unhealthily dehydrated. You don't get abs like that in the first place unless you're doing intense workouts, dumping protein in everything you eat, and probably restricting food unhealthily specifically to get that kind of look

But it's not a problem just because it's unrealistic, it's a problem because it betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of what muscle is and does.

Like, drawing bodies in dynamic poses is not going to be very fun for you if you don't get that muscle is squishy when relaxed and you're imagining it as this tough, stiff pulley system

    the-grollican

like, if you look at renaissance and baroque paintings of men, which were painted by masters of anatomy who did intensive studies including disections to learn how to depict the male body, the men in those paintings and sculptures DONT look like the above. they almost never have defined abs.

for instance, if you look at rubens abduction of ganymede,

an idealised figure of a man who is meant to be very attractive. hes literally ganymede! but not only does he not have abs, you can see rolls of fat where his trunk bends. his arms are clearly muscular but the dehydrating looking hyperdefinition is clearly lacking. below is michelangelo, who specialized in painting extremely muscular men and did more dissections than the average doctor (apologies for image quality but it shows my point)

so yeah please dont learn to draw men from tutorials that look like that. learn it from secret pope-sanctioned dissections

    musings-from-mars

Getting really sick of all the "There's No Place Like Chrome" ads on youtube. There's Firefox. Firefox saves your passwords. Firefox autofills things if you want. Firefox also does things that Chrome doesn't like allow adblockers, and it does not mine your data and sell your information for advertising purposes. Google is really trying to push people to use Chrome so they can take as much data from users as possible in order to make as much money as possible and it's borderline sinister.

    Anyway, download Firefox.

The irony of this is because of the ad blockers on my Firefox, I've never seen any such ad.

A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.

    fat-thin-skinny

this fucks me up every single time

    acutelesbian

I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.

After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.

She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.

Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.

The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.

The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.

Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.

I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.
