    Hey Tumblr–

A couple of weeks ago we announced an update to our Community Guidelines regarding adult content, and we’ve received a lot of questions and feedback from you. First and foremost, we are sorry that this has not been an easy transition and we know we can do a better job of explaining what we’re doing. We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy task and we appreciate your patience as we work through the challenges and limitations of correctly flagging tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos.

Today, December 17th, our policy begins to take effect. This means that we will start hiding – not deleting – posts that contain GIFs, videos, and photos from public view that are in violation of our policy. Again, this is a complex problem, and over the coming weeks we will gradually, and carefully, flag more adult content. (Yes, we will still make mistakes, but hopefully fewer and fewer.)

More importantly, we want to clarify the things that you, as a community, have asked about the most.

Tumblr will always be a place to explore your identity. Tumblr has always been home to marginalized communities and always will be. We fully recognize Tumblr’s special obligation to these communities and are committed to ensuring that our new policy on adult content does not silence the vital conversations that take place here every day. LGBTQ+ conversations, exploration of sexuality and gender, efforts to document the lives and challenges of those in the sex worker industry, and posts with pictures, videos, and GIFs of gender-confirmation surgery are all examples of content that is not only permitted on Tumblr but actively encouraged.

We also want to reiterate some important information from our Support post:

Your content will not be deleted. If your post(s) are flagged under the new policy, they will be hidden from public view and will only be visible to you. You can appeal these flags if you feel your content was erroneously marked as adult content. Upcoming feature changes will also make appeals more manageable for those of you with multiple flagged posts. Your blog won’t be deleted if you’ve posted adult content in the past, and there is nothing you need to do if you have interacted with adult content up until now–it will just be flagged and not publicly viewable. Don’t forget too that you can download your content. It’s yours after all, and we don’t take that lightly.

What is still permitted? We’ve heard a lot of concern about what the policy does not permit, but we want to make sure that you also know what is still permitted:

Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, specifically sculptures and illustrations, is also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr. Although, photorealistic imagery or photography – images, videos, or GIFs – with real humans that include exposed genitals or female-presenting (yeah, we know you hate this term) nipples or depict sex acts is not allowed per our guidelines.

Examples of exceptions that are still permitted but that you may need to appeal if they are misclassified are: exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery.

The automated tools will improve. Having a post mistakenly flagged as adult totally sucks; we understand and agree that there have been too many wrongfully flagged posts since we announced the policy change. With tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos to review and millions of new posts every day, we really need your help to get it right.

The more you help by reporting content that’s not permitted and by appealing content that you believe was flagged incorrectly, the better our automated tools will get at classifying your posts correctly. The more content these tools review, the more they will learn the difference between what’s permitted and what’s not. Most importantly, your content won’t be deleted if erroneously flagged and all appeals will be sent to a real, live human who can make the appropriate call.

We love Tumblr and the communities that call Tumblr home. You are Tumblr. This place has always been a reflection of the voices and communities that thrive here. As you’ve always done, help us continue to shape Tumblr into the community you want it to be.

    Hey! quick idea.

Let’s take this post and make it a sort of hub for exodus information. I’d hate to lose all of you and I would like to see you some place else again, so I’ll monitor reblogs & follow as many of you as possible.

There are no clear winning replacement platforms but following a bunch of you all over the place will do for now. Reblog and add your new blogs! I’ll start:

    Pillowfort
    Ello
    Bdsmlr

A quick PSA/remark about a couple of related things: I’ve seen stuff about a ‘cumblr’ but that reeeaalllyyy looks like a scam to make a quick buck, so I would advise against investing in it. It looks like they’re betting on a scattered community that can’t fight back after the fact. So watch out for scams!

Also: popup websites like bdsmlr are security breaches waiting to happen so make sure you don’t use valuable information there. If the front-end functions and looks like this, the back-end can’t be much better, not to mention the potential lawsuits for flatout copying a websites look and functionality completely. Hopefully they’ll improve though.

Added Humblr.social too! Highly customizable but no true gifs I’ve heard.

    Sharesome keeps getting mentioned.

Here’s the thing though, to post any media at all you have to get a verified account and with verification you claim copyright / have to be able to reproduce releaseforms from models and studios etc. I’ve never claimed copyright, because gifmakers like me are operating well within fair use territory as remixers / fan-edits. Sharesome is very clear about not supporting that, so I’m not moving there.

MeWe is mentioned a lot, but they explicitly don’t allow porn so it would be a matter of time before being banned if I went there. So not an option at all.

Twitter doesn’t allow for gifsets & the platform is a no go for me anyway. Twitter is banhappy with nsfw accounts & the userbase in general is toxic.

I’ve got highest hopes for Pillowfort. We’ll have to have some patience with it because it’s a little overrun now, but they’re switching development into high gear and buying a bunch of capacity too. Well worth the five bucks they charge right now (even with the slowdowns etc), but you can wait until it’s free too ofcourse. They have all basic tumblr functions in their to-do list

Ello is nice too, no real disadvantages except for blog layout (matter of opinion though).

bdsmlr is a temporary placeholder too I guess, but I don’t intend on staying there very long & it feels like a major fuckup is bound to happen at any moment (like a giant userbase information-leak, virus/exploit outbreak or crackdown of the law) because everything is so broken it must be vulnerable to that too and there is no moderator system in place at all.

Ello just updated their community guidelines, so scratch that whole “no real disadvantages“ thing i said earlier. Same as mewe:

I’ll be at pillowfort, bdsmlr and humblr!

    mary-willows:

Just created a bdsmlr account. I must admit that I am positively surprised. It looks more or less exactly like tumblr and has similar functions. Thank you for the recommendation. I just added a few vids/gifs. Once the tumblr import function is available you can expect brand new filthy content 😛

    https://mary-willows.bdsmlr.com/

I created a humblr.social account but there’s quite a big difference to tumblr. If you are registered to this site, check out my profile. I will fill my profile with content soon ;)

    • tumblthree is a great tool with a ton of functions including downloading whole blogs, only posts tagged with a certain tag, all the posts you’ve liked, etc. etc. along with being able to download every type of media hosted on tumblr (pictures, videos, audio, everything). it also has a proper GUI so no computer knowledge required beyond downloading and running programs!
    • if you have some knowledge of computers you can try this github solution which uses a python script to download your whole blog to your computer. even if you don’t know anything about programming or the command line they give a very good beginners tutorial on how to use it so you should still give it a shot!
    • here’s another python script that should allow you to archive all the images from your blog or your likes, though it requires some knowledge of python and the command line or very very good google skills.

    some notes

edit: please stop commenting on this post to self-promote your porn accounts on other sites. those replies / reblogs will be deleted or hidden.

please note that every site on this list will have pros and cons, and i haven’t listed them here since this post would be a mile long otherwise. please do your research before moving completely over to another site in case they have policies you disagree with.

also, because I see a lot of misinformed people ranting about this: deviantart does not own the art you post. some years ago hot topic stole a ton of art from DA and sold it on merchandise and people assumed that DA gave them permission to do it despite there being literally zero evidence for that claim. DA explictly states in their TOS that you retain copyright and sole license of the art you post.

and related, mastodon does not allow or condone CP or pedophilia. the people spreading this info are misinformed about what mastodon is. it is not an exact twitter clone; anyone anywhere can host a mastodon instance using their personal computer as a server, which means mastodon as a company can’t do jack shit to moderate them. what they DO is permanently block all users from every other instance from viewing or interacting with that instance, and add that instance to a publicly viewable list along with the reason for the block. please give their post about anti-abuse measures a read before making snap judgements.

    Excellent list of alternatives!

    celeb-cock:

I’ve decided to set up shop at blogr.xxx, it has similar functionality to Tumblr, but is centered on NSFW content. It also allows for larger resolutions and file sizes than Tumblr!

It’s going to take me a while to get everything re-uploaded there, but the blog is already up.

Depending on where the bulk of other people end up going I may end up moving again, but Blogr seems good for now.
