THE MOST RAMPANT FORM OF THEFT IS WAGE THEFT.

Can I say this any louder? Employers steal about $50 BILLION per year from their workers.

Not only that, wage theft has essentially no consequences for those who commit it. Federal law discourages prosecutions, requiring the plaintiffs to prove that the employer was both a repeat offender and a willful thief. From 2005-2016, US prosecutors averaged a total of ONE conviction per year.

Even when caught, thieving employers rarely have to pay back missing wages. While payback does sometimes happen, it’s typically the result of a civil suit, so it’s almost unheard of for the thieves to receive any sort of criminal punishment.

Changing the law could help, but the only way to address this problem effectively, and the main way employees have fought back successfully, is with stronger unions.
