Rutger Bregman is the Dutch historian who became a global sensation after an appearance at this year’s Davos summit, where he accused attending billionaires of ignoring taxation. Now he has created another viral moment in an extremely uncomfortable interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson.

Bregman so riled Carson with his accusations of hypocrisy, critiques of Fox’s conservative agenda, and attacks on Donald Trump that the TV host called him a “moron” and angrily told him: “Go fuck yourself.”

Lot more people around the world are going to watch this now than if it actually aired. Speaking truth to power is the best viral content!

the co option of grimes by the corporate system is still a shocking cultural event to me. it is the forcing of the cool weirdo internet girl persona into the inner circle of media and its filtering to create an effective product. her lyrics even seem to vaguely refer to insurrection, uprising and oppression in songs like Violence and We Apprecite Power, but the message is filtered through this consumer media streamlining and is purged in favor of pure format. A similarly shocking process of sacrificing message for ideology-free format happened to pride parades that perserve the familiar format of a pride walk but were processed and sterilized in order to be deemed marketable.

“The police spend very little of their time dealing with violent criminals—indeed, police sociologists report that only about 10% of the average police officer’s time is devoted to criminal matters of any kind. Most of the remaining 90% is spent dealing with infractions of various administrative codes and regulations: all those rules about how and where one can eat, drink, smoke, sell, sit, walk, and drive. If two people punch each other, or even draw a knife on each other, police are unlikely to get involved. Drive down the street in a car without license plates, on the other hand, and the authorities will show up instantly, threatening all sorts of dire consequences if you don’t do exactly what they tell you. The police, then, are essentially just bureaucrats with weapons. Their main role in society is to bring the threat of physical force—even, death—into situations where it would never have been otherwise invoked, such as the enforcement of civic ordinances about the sale of untaxed cigarettes.”

I’ve definitely reblogged this before, and I’ll definitely post it again.

Context: In 1977, Exxon researchers gave executives a definitive report that burning fossil fuels was causing climate change. Exxon went on to spend at least $30 million funding public skepticism about climate change and lobbying against federal action.

More than half of the world’s industrial carbon emissions have been produced since 1977. ExxonMobil’s 2018 earnings were $20.8 billion.

Antifascism being declared terrorism in America means it’s time to choose a fucking side.

Q: Antifa isn’t an organization, he can’t do that

A: Yes he can, Bush did it with “terrorism” as a dog whistle for Muslims in 2001 and was rewarded with the AUMF, what amounts to an imperium for endless war with no congressional oversight.

Q: Vote him out in 2020 to fix it

A: No it won’t, Obama streamlined the imperium Congress gave Bush with the AUMF and not only continued the War on Terror, he made it more secretive so the US can continue endless wars but without “boots on the ground”.

If Biden won, even if he were ideologically aligned (his voting record, including on the AUMF, says otherwise), there’s no stuffing this shit back up America’s collective asshole. Biden would, as Obama did, expand and consolidate the state surveillance apparatus toward a new endless war but this time domestic rather than Muslims abroad.

Q: Ok but he still has no authori-

Yes he does. Americans have lived in a fascist dictatorship under one ruler since Reagan at the earliest, but to disguise that fact, Americans came up with the pretentious euphemism “unitary executive”.

The consolidation of sovereign power in the executive at the expense of the other two branches of government only increased under Bush and Obama, but this was consistent with a pattern that arguably started with Andrew Jackson in 1830, picked up under Lincoln, then again under Theodore and later Franklin D Roosevelt - in other words, whenever America has some new enemy to exterminate to maintain the plantation, the presidency consolidates power. (Jackson to settle the Western US; Lincoln to break down and restructure the inefficient feudal economy of the Confederacy; T. Roosevelt to colonize Cuba/Philippines/China/Korea/and others; FDR to wage war on the world and establish planetary hegemony).

    she-who-is-her

Voting won’t fix this. No government ever gives up a shred of authority willingly. Sanders wouldn’t fix this. Once it happens that’s the new normal. It would be a political nightmare for any president of either party who tried reverse this. In eight years Obama couldn’t close one torture camp of at least 5 known torture camps. After this goes through anyone to the left of Joe Biden is a terrorist that hates America as far as the government is concerned.

Genuinely shocked Anderson Cooper let Cornel West go off like this on CNN without trying to cut him off. Holy fuck this is good

I think we are witnessing America as a failed social experiment. What I mean by that is, that the history of black people for over 270 years has been looking at America’s failures. It’s capitalist economy could not generate and deliver in such a way that people could live lives of decency. The nation-state, it’s criminal justice system, it’s legal system could not generate protection of rights and liberties. And now our culture, of course, everything’s so market-driven, everything’s for sale; you can’t deliver the kind of really real nourishment for soul, for meaning, for purpose.

And so when you get this perfect storm of all of these multiple failures, at these different levels of the American empire. And Martin King already told us about that. When I saw those pictures there in Atlanta, you can see Martin right there in Atlanta saying “I told you about militarism, I told you about poverty, I told you about materialism, I told you about racism in all of it’s forms, whatever forms it takes, I told you about xenophobia. And now these chickens are coming home to roost, you’re reaping what you sow.”

And in this instant, you have brother George, where it is so clear, it is a lynching at the highest level, no one can deny it. And I thank God that we have people in the streets. Can you imagine this kind of lynching taking place and people are indifferent? People don’t care? People are callous?…

its 2035 and i wake up to a porn ad playing on my microchip and the only way to shut it off is to drink a verification bottle of Dasani™️ which has a gif of a naked woman playing automatically on the label and the tagline “satisfy your thirst” and the most downloaded app on the appstore is a DeepFakeNudeFree (for 1.99 the pro version removes ads and allows you to make deepfakes of two people at once) and i tell my sex positive therapist i feel depressed and he recommends i take high doses of tranquillizers and start an onlyfans to reaffirm my self-worth with easy-to-visualize monetary validation and tells me politely he would be the first to subscribe
