Do you know, did Mimi ever meet Sean?

Yoko & Sean outside Mendips on 24th January 1984.

Yes, on at least one occasion - maybe more, but definitely on 24th January 1984.

In January 1984, Yoko and Sean visited Japan and France and then on the spur of the moment, they decided to go to Liverpool. I think this might have been at the request of Sean, who wanted to see John’s birthplace.

Strangely, they had some trouble at Manchester Airport, when customs insisted on a thorough search of their luggage, but once that was over with three limousines took them to Liverpool. (Yoko and Sean had an entourage of 7 people with them, including 2 bodyguards, still paranoid about being attacked after John - plus a hoard of press met them at the airport).

First they visited Strawberry Fields and then Mendips, where Sean was given a Cavern Club badge. (There was a lot of press following, but apparently they retuned later in private to look around properly). They visited Penny Lane, Quarrybank and some other Liverpool landmarks and then in the afternoon arranged to visit Mimi.

Mimi had been living with her sister Anne (who was known as Nanny) as Mimi was suffering from a heart condition and Anne was taking care of her. The Liverpool Echo reported:

One of the likely ports of call on Yoko’s whistle-stop trip to Liverpool was the little semi-detached house in Wirral where her adoptive mother-in-law is now living. Mimi Smith, the woman who brought up John Lennon as her own son, has been staying at her sister’s house for more than a year. Illness forced Aunt Mimi to move back up to Liverpool from her home in Poole, Dorset. She had an operation which left her with a heart condition and she hasn’t been well enough yet to return to living on her own. Aunt Mimi was unable to comment early today, but her sister, Anne, another of John’s aunts said, ‘We would love to see Yoko, but we know nothing about this visit. She hasn’t been in touch. She doesn’t write to us and the last we heard from her and Sean was when we got our Christmas presents and they were very nice. We were very pleased.’

Anne was also quoted as saying:

“I last saw Yoko more than twelve years ago, but I have never seen Sean. Mimi has seen them both*, but the last time she spoke to them on the phone was more than a year ago. Yoko is a jolly and friendly person. She didn’t visit us when they were in London last year. It would be strange if she came to Liverpool without coming here, but we have heard nothing. We would like to see John’s little boy. Mimi is still full of beans, but she is not strong enough to walk around. The doctor says she can have a look at her home again in Poole in the spring if she wants to. I was very close to John before he went to America and we were all very hurt when he died. It was just like when his mother died. America is a disgrace.“

    * This is what I meant by they met on at least one occasion, maybe more, as Anne seems to say Mimi had met Sean and Yoko before. If so, I’m not sure when.

The press were not invited to come to visit Mini, who was in Rock Ferry with Anne at the time, although I think the Liverpool Echo came along. Yoko had requested that the visit be kept private. As such there are no published/public domain photos of the meeting (as far as I am aware). Sean and Yoko stayed all afternoon with Anne and Mimi.

In the Liverpool Echo Anne was also quoted saying:

“It was just like seeing John walk through that door again. [Sean] is just like John, with the same mannerisms and everything - it’s amazing. […] Yoko also brought a copy of the latest record and autographed it for my son, Michael. Mimi is so much more cheerful now. I think the visit has done her good. She will remember today for a long time.”

In an Irish newspaper (which I don’t have the name of) Mimi was quoted as saying:

“Sean is like John in every way - looks and manner, and he has got John’s sense of humour. As long as he keeps away from music, he will be all right.”

    Yoko commented:

“[Sean] got on so well with Mimi, it was great. It was beautiful to meet her again. I had a lovely day - it was really beautiful. I’m glad that I came back here, and I’m glad I showed Liverpool to Sean. […] We came to Liverpool for Sean - it’s his heritage. We’ve had a wonderful day.“

And Sean, when asked what aspect of his Liverpool trip he’d most enjoyed:

“I liked Aunt Mimi’s house best.”

In the Irish newspaper (not in the Liverpool Echo though) they also stated that Yoko and Sean met up with Julian while they were in the area, stating”

[Yoko and Julian] have become close friends since the former Beatle was murdered, and regularly phone each other across the Atlantic.

Make of that what you will, although Julian would have only been 20 at the time. All reports of the trip were quite positive and a little ‘happy families’ (you have to bear in mind this wasn’t long after John had died).

Here’s some more photos from that day:

I can’t find any other evidence of them meeting up with Julian on that visit, but there are these photos from 21st March 1984, a couple of months later. This is in New York, a breaking ground ceremony for the Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park, and Yoko had invited Julian over for it - so perhaps at that time, they were closer/friendlier than at other times.

    Thank you for your question!
