It has come to my attention that this year is the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower so happy anniversary to my direct ancestor Edward Doty and Edward Doty only, who, upon arriving on the Mayflower in 1620:

  • went to court over two-dozen times for fraud, slander, fighting, assault, debt, trespass, and theft, avoiding the stocks on every charge and only paying small fines
  • made several fraudulent real estate deals
  • sued his own father-in-law
  • posted bail for a man accused of being a serial poisoner
  • stole a Mayflower launchboat and tried to steal a small island
  • got sued by three people at once
  • fought the first duel in New England, resulting in the town governor ordering that both he and the other participant (another guy named Edward) be tied together with ropes Get-Along Shirt style for 24 hours until they could learn to be friends again
  • got let out of said Get-Along Shirt after only an hour because he wouldn’t stop bitching about it
